“Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” ~ George Bernard Shaw
Open-mindedness has been linked to increased happiness. When you are close-minded, you are constantly in opposition of beliefs and ideas that counter to yours. This raises your stress response and cortisol levels in the brain, making it difficult to stay positive and at ease in your daily life.
Changing your opinion is a critical step in the learning process. The more open-minded you are, the more you allow yourself the space to grow, adapt and evolve as you’re presented with new information.
Open-mindedness helps you embrace change, accelerate growth and curiosity, encourages you to try new things, helps you respect other people’s differences and even helps you to live more int he present.
Think of an idea that you oppose. If you’re not naturally open-minded, start with an idea that you don’t feel that emotionally about.
Write as many reasons as possible to support your opposing stance. Your goal is not to change your own mind. The goal is to begin to empathize with another viewpoint and as well and understand that two opposing viewpoints can also be held at the same time.
