Being in the presence of someone that’s highly emotional, or angry especially, can be very stressful.
And whether their anger or upset is justified in your eyes or not, you can bet it feels justified in their eyes… even if just in the moment.
When we are emotional, our prefrontal cortex – the part of your brain in charge of logic and reason – goes offline.
So when we get upset, it doesn’t really matter if someone else tells us a logical reason for why we should not be upset. We still feel it, so we’re actually likely to just double down on those emotions.
Most of us aren’t taught how to deal with emotions. So we hold them in until we can’t anymore and then wonder why they feel so out of control.
Regardless of why we get upset, it’s hard to be your best self all the time, and I think the best we can do is give each other grace in the times we’re a little off, whether it’s someone you love or even yourself.
So today we’re going to learn how to calm an angry or upset person in 90 seconds or less. And I will tell you, it’s not only easy to learn, but so far I found that it works miraculously.
Our guest is Douglas Noll, award-winning author, teacher, trainer, and a highly experienced mediator.
We Will Learn
- Why emotional invalidation is the first deadly sin
- The secret to de-escalating emotions in just a few minutes
