Is Social Media turning you into a narcissist?
We already know that we get dopamine hits with almost every social media feature: likes, comments, shares, even arguments. But I think this is a bigger deal than most people realize.
This constant barrage of shallow rewards rewires your brain to want more of what caused that dopamine release, which leads to social media addiction.
But here’s the thing, it’s not just that you become addicted to the app, you become addicted to yourself. Or the story of you that you’re putting out there.
So I feel like the question is not if social media is making us all more narcissistic but how much and what do we do about it? Also, if this is happening on a global scale, how do we protect ourselves from the other digital narcissists in the world?
That’s what we’re talking about today.
Our guest is Lena Derhally. She is a licensed psychotherapist in private practice. She is also the author of The Facebook Narcissist: How to Identify and Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones from Social Media Narcissism.
